WLD Drops 10% as World Foundation Sells 217M Tokens for $52.5M

The World Foundation, the nonprofit steering the Worldcoin project, has raised $52.5 million by selling 217 million WLD tokens in a “first close” led by Pantera Capital. Every token sold carries a 12-month lockup, yet WLD still fell roughly 10% following news of the sale, as traders weighed the near-term supply implications against the fresh capital injection.

Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini, Susquehanna and other investors joined Pantera in the round, according to reports confirmed by both BeInCrypto and The Block. The Foundation has not disclosed the full list of participants or the total size the sale is targeting beyond this first tranche.

Locked Supply, Immediate Price Reaction

The 217 million WLD sold represents new supply issued directly by the Foundation rather than a secondary sale of existing holder tokens. With a 12-month lockup attached, none of these tokens can hit exchanges before the sale’s anniversary, meaning the circulating supply is not affected today.

Despite that lockup, WLD dropped about 10% in the wake of the announcement. The move reflects a familiar pattern in crypto markets: investors often price in future dilution the moment a large token issuance is disclosed, even when the actual unlock is a year away.

Where the $52.5 Million Is Headed

The World Foundation said the capital will fund the expansion of World ID, the project’s biometric identity verification system, into enterprise platforms, consumer applications, and AI agents. World ID uses iris-scanning hardware to issue proof-of-personhood credentials, which the Foundation is positioning as infrastructure for distinguishing humans from bots as AI-generated content and automated accounts proliferate online.

Pantera Capital’s role as lead investor in the first close signals continued institutional appetite for identity-verification infrastructure tied to token economics, even as the broader market reaction shows investors remain wary of new WLD issuance regardless of lockup terms.

Why It Matters for WLD Holders

For existing WLD holders, the key numbers to track are the 217 million token count against WLD’s total and circulating supply, and the 12-month countdown before this tranche becomes liquid. A locked sale funds development without immediate sell pressure, but it also sets up a known future unlock date that markets will likely revisit as it approaches.

The $52.5 million raised gives the Foundation runway to push World ID adoption beyond its existing user base, a bet that ties WLD’s long-term value to how widely the identity system gets integrated into enterprise and AI platforms over the next year.
