Armstrong: AI Agents Will Trade More Per Day Than All Humans Combined
Coinbase's CEO rejects the "pivot to AI" narrative, arguing AI agents will need crypto rails and out-transact humanity daily.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong pushed back on Monday against a narrative circulating in tech and crypto circles that entrepreneurs and investors should abandon blockchain projects to chase the artificial intelligence boom. In a post on X, Armstrong argued the opposite is true: AI adoption makes crypto rails more valuable, not less, because autonomous AI agents will eventually need their own payment infrastructure — and will use it far more intensively than humans do.
“AI agents will need their own financial infrastructure and will eventually transact far more per day than all humans combined,” Armstrong wrote, framing crypto as the settlement layer machines will use to pay each other for compute, data and services without human intermediaries.
Why Armstrong calls the “pivot to AI” logic flawed
Armstrong said he has heard versions of the “drop crypto for AI” argument before, and dismissed it as “zero-sum, scarcity thinking.” His central point is that crypto is a general-purpose technology — comparable to the internet or cloud computing — rather than a narrow bet that competes head-to-head with AI for capital and attention.
Under that framing, the two technologies are complementary rather than substitutes: AI needs a way to move value autonomously, and blockchain-based rails are positioned to provide exactly that, according to Armstrong. He did not attach a timeline or transaction estimate to when AI-agent volumes might overtake human activity on crypto networks.
Coinbase already building toward agent-driven payments
Both outlets reporting on the comments noted that Coinbase is already positioning itself to serve this machine-to-machine economy, building payment infrastructure aimed at letting AI agents transact directly on crypto rails rather than through traditional banking or card networks. Armstrong’s remarks effectively double as a strategic justification for that build-out, tying Coinbase’s product roadmap to the broader AI megatrend rather than treating it as a separate, competing market.
Why it matters for holders and builders
For crypto investors, the comments matter less as a market-moving catalyst and more as a signal of where a major exchange operator sees long-term demand for blockchain rails: not just retail speculation or DeFi, but a potentially much larger base of AI-agent transactions. If autonomous agents do begin settling payments on-chain at scale, that would represent a new, non-human source of transaction volume and fee revenue for networks Coinbase already supports.
No transaction figures, timelines, or specific protocols were disclosed alongside Armstrong’s statement, and his claim about AI agents eventually out-transacting all humans remains a forward-looking assertion rather than a measured outcome. Investors should treat it as a strategic thesis from Coinbase’s leadership rather than a market data point.
