MoonPay’s PayBox Vault Lets ChatGPT, Claude Users Execute Crypto Trades
MoonPay's new PayBox vault lets AI chatbots trigger crypto swaps and transfers while MPC and TEE tech keep wallet keys out of reach.

MoonPay has launched PayBox, a payment vault that allows ChatGPT and Claude users to authorize crypto purchases, token swaps and crosschain transfers directly from a chat conversation, while keeping full custody of their funds. The product, announced July 29, 2026, plugs a crypto wallet and traditional payment methods into the two leading AI assistants so the models can draft and, in some cases, execute blockchain transactions from natural-language prompts.
The launch is the latest sign that AI agents are being wired directly into on-chain finance, a shift Cryptaur has tracked as major exchanges race to give chatbots the ability to move real money rather than just analyze it.
How the vault keeps keys out of reach
According to MoonPay, PayBox relies on multi-party computation and trusted execution environments to safeguard wallet keys, a design meant to stop both the AI assistant and MoonPay itself from unilaterally accessing user funds. Users can require manual approval, via passkey, for every single transaction, or set spending limits that let the AI act autonomously within predefined boundaries.
The vault supports multiple blockchains and lets users fund transactions through debit cards, bank accounts, Apple Pay and PayPal. MoonPay said developers can also embed PayBox into their own AI applications using a dedicated software development kit, extending the vault beyond ChatGPT and Claude to third-party products.
x402 protocol adds a standardized payment rail
PayBox also plugs into x402, an open payment protocol originally built by Coinbase to let AI agents make internet-native payments. Coinbase contributed x402 to the Linux Foundation in April 2026, converting it into a vendor-neutral industry standard rather than a proprietary rail controlled by a single exchange.
Coinbase has kept building on that foundation through the year. In June 2026, the exchange rolled out tools letting AI agents accept USDC payments, trade crypto, discover paid services through an AI marketplace, and process high-frequency micropayments more efficiently — infrastructure that PayBox now taps into for its own transaction flow.
Why it matters for crypto holders
For everyday holders, PayBox lowers the technical bar for executing swaps, crosschain bridges and DeFi interactions — tasks that previously required navigating wallet interfaces, gas settings and bridge UIs manually. The custody model, where keys are split via MPC and shielded in a TEE, is designed to reassure users wary of handing spending power to a chatbot.
The move also signals growing competition to control the “AI-to-wallet” layer of crypto infrastructure, as MoonPay, Coinbase and OKX each push agent-payment products this year. Whoever wins that layer effectively gains a distribution channel every time a user asks an AI assistant to move funds.
