Tether’s Q2 Attestation Shows $1.3B Profit, $5.2B in Excess Reserves

Tether's BDO-audited Q2 statement shows $1.3B net operating profit and $5.2B in reserves above full USDT backing, driven by Treasury interest income.

Tether’s Q2 Attestation Shows $1.3B Profit, $5.2B in Excess Reserves

Tether’s latest attestation statement, audited by accounting firm BDO, reports $1.3 billion in net operating profit for the second quarter and $5.2 billion in reserves held above what is needed to fully back circulating USDT. The figures come from Tether’s own attestation document rather than a government filing, and they were first surfaced in a single outlet’s coverage reviewed for this article.

That single-document basis matters for how the numbers should be read. Attestations are periodic snapshots produced by an outside accountant working from data Tether supplies. They are not the same as a full independent audit, and no second filing was available to cross-check the exact figures reported here.

What the Attestation Actually Shows

The $1.3 billion figure is net operating profit for the quarter, a measure of earnings from Tether’s core business rather than the total size of its reserve pool. The $5.2 billion excess reserve figure is a separate number: it represents assets held above the amount needed to back every USDT token in circulation on a one-to-one basis.

Tether’s reporting has repeatedly pointed to the same underlying driver behind both figures: interest income earned on large holdings of U.S. Treasury securities. Short-term Treasury yields have kept that income stream sizable, and it remains the main engine behind Tether’s quarterly profit reports.

Excess Reserves Are Not Circulating Supply

For holders of USDT, the distinction between these terms is not just accounting language. Circulating supply is the number of tokens actually in wallets and exchanges. Excess reserves are the cushion sitting on top of that backing, funds Tether says it holds beyond the dollar-for-dollar requirement.

A larger cushion is generally read as a buffer against redemption stress or asset price swings within the reserve portfolio. It does not, by itself, tell a holder how that reserve is allocated across cash, Treasury bills, or other instruments, details that typically appear deeper in the full attestation report rather than in headline figures.

USDT remains the largest dollar-pegged stablecoin by circulating supply, which keeps every quarterly attestation under close watch from traders who use it as a settlement currency across exchanges. The next data point to watch is Tether’s following quarterly attestation, which will show whether the $5.2 billion buffer and the pace of Treasury-driven profit hold, shrink, or grow further.
