World Cup Prediction Markets Hit $20B On-Chain, $5.7B Bet During Tournament
Chainalysis: 400,000+ wallets drove $20B in World Cup prediction volume; US, China led; NFTs added $24M.

Blockchain-based prediction markets tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup processed $20 billion in trading volume, with more than 400,000 wallets placing on-chain bets on the tournament, according to a new report from analytics firm Chainalysis. Of that total, roughly $5.7 billion was wagered during the five-week competition itself, and World Cup-linked markets accounted for about 63% of all prediction market activity in that window.
The figures mark one of the largest documented surges in on-chain betting activity tied to a single global event, underscoring how quickly prediction markets have scaled beyond crypto-native niches into mainstream sports wagering.
US and China top the country rankings
Chainalysis said participants came from every continent except Antarctica, but attributable trading volume was concentrated in a handful of markets. The United States and China generated the highest country-level flows, followed by Canada, Thailand and the United Kingdom.
For crypto traders and platform operators, that geographic spread signals demand for regulated, blockchain-settled sports markets well beyond the jurisdictions that already have mature prediction-market infrastructure.
Illicit flows stayed under 1%, but $5.4M still moved
Despite the scale of the volume, Chainalysis found illicit participation was limited: fewer than 1% of wallets active in World Cup prediction markets had ties to illicit actors. Even so, the firm identified roughly $5.4 million in flows originating from sanctioned entities and other illicit sources moving through these markets.
That figure is small relative to the $20 billion headline number, but it gives compliance teams and regulators a concrete benchmark as prediction-market volumes climb toward mainstream sports-betting scale.
FIFA Collect NFTs add $24M as tickets move on-chain
Beyond wagering, Chainalysis tracked $24 million in trading volume for FIFA Collect NFTs, the tournament’s official digital collectibles platform. More than 100,000 match tickets were distributed through the same platform, pointing to growing use of blockchain rails for ticketing alongside collectibles.
Wallets linked to sanctioned entities made up less than 0.01% of FIFA Collect users, a figure Chainalysis attributed partly to the platform’s identity verification requirements — a contrast with the looser on-chain betting markets where illicit exposure, while still small in percentage terms, ran meaningfully higher in dollar terms.
Why the numbers matter
For crypto investors and builders, the takeaway is less about the World Cup and more about what the volume implies for on-chain prediction markets generally: $20 billion in tournament-linked flow, concentrated in a handful of countries, with illicit activity contained but not zero. Chainalysis said the data suggests blockchain infrastructure will play a growing role in major global events, while also flagging that compliance tooling — such as the identity checks used by FIFA Collect — measurably reduces exposure to sanctioned wallets compared to less-verified betting venues.
As prediction markets attract broader retail participation ahead of future major sporting events, this dataset gives traders, exchanges and regulators a first hard benchmark for how large — and how clean — on-chain wagering volumes can get.
